Japan developed a new heat-resistant flame-retardant resin

The Osaka Municipal Institute of Technology has successfully developed a new heat-resistant material made from the benzoxazine resin developed by the institute. When benzoxazine resin is heated, it does not produce any volatile compounds (such as ammonia, etc.), but it can form Novolak-type phenolic resin. Therefore, the benzoxazine resin has extremely high heat resistance and does not require additional flame retardant. Thus it can be expected that this kind of resin will become a new material for multifunctional heat-resistant flame-retardant reinforced plastics.
In general, the phenolic value has good heat resistance and particularly excellent flame retardancy and may be used as a flame-retardant plastic material.
However, when the phenolic resin cures, a condensation reaction occurs to generate water and volatile substances (such as ammonia, etc.), with the result that voids are generated in its molded product. This is why the resin is rarely used as a glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) in industry.
The study found that benzoxazine resins can be used instead of phenolic resins to avoid the above-mentioned deficiencies of phenolic resins. The Institute plans to accelerate the study of this topic (including cooperation with some private companies). The answer is to promote the practical application of new resins in the industry.
