2003 Coating Market Overview

This year, China's paint production has grown by a large margin compared with last year. According to statistics, from January to September, the national coating output was 1,420,500 tons, an increase of 10.61% over the same period of last year. It is estimated that the annual output could exceed 2 million tons and it will reach a new level. Among the 18 categories of paints, the largest output in China is alkyd resin paint, followed by phenolic resin paint, and the proportion of high-grade synthetic resin paints reaches around 70%. Energy-saving and low-pollution paints (water-based paints, powder coatings, high solids coatings, radiation The proportion of cured coating) is about 26%.
Because paint production has the characteristics of low investment and quick results, since the reform and opening up, township and village enterprises, private enterprises and foreign capital have rapidly entered the paint industry. According to the statistics of the 1995 industrial census, there are 4,544 paint manufacturing enterprises in the country, among which 3,118 are independent accounting enterprises in townships and towns. According to estimates, at present, there are about 8,000 paint companies in the country, mainly concentrated in the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta, where the economy is developing rapidly. Among them, the paint production in East China is the largest, accounting for 45% of the national total; Central and South China accounts for 30%; North China accounts for 15%; Northeast, Southwest, and Northwest China accounts for about 10%. Foreign-owned enterprises, joint ventures, and domestic large-scale production plants are marketed as mid- to high-end products. Individuals and small township enterprises generally produce low-end products.
In order to improve the overall technical level of the paint industry, during the “Eighth Five-Year Plan” and “Nineth Five-Year Plan” period, the state organized 63 development projects for coating innovation and technology, and most of them have already achieved industrialization. Its main innovations include thick-film cathode electrodeposition coatings, metallic flash coatings, thick-film architectural coatings, waterborne industrial coatings, water-based anti-corrosion coatings, polyurethane wood coatings, weather-resistant coil coatings, marine marine coatings, and light-resistant molybdenum-chrome. Materials, pearlescent pigments, etc. China's paint industry has successively introduced and established several sets of automotive paint production equipment from Japan, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States and other countries, which has played a catalytic role in the improvement of domestic automotive paint production technology. China has also imported more than 10 latex paint production lines from Japan, France, the United States, and other countries, so that the level of latex paint production lines and latex paints is currently not lower than in industrialized countries. In marine coatings, marine coatings and anti-corrosion coatings, Hempel of Denmark, IP of the United Kingdom, Jotuh of Norway, Earl of Great Britain, and Kansai of Japan successively set up factories in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Ningbo and Tianjin. Some well-known auxiliaries and pigment manufacturers abroad have also sought opportunities to set up factories in China. The internationalization of the paint market has promoted the technological progress of China's paint industry and shortened the gap between China's high-end coatings and foreign countries.
Although China’s coating production and sales volume has leapt to the fourth place in the world, its per capita annual consumption is much lower than that of industrialized countries. The annual output of coatings in the United States, Germany, and Japan, which are the top three countries in the world, is 22 kg, 27 kg, and 17 kg, respectively. The world average is 4 kg, while in China, it is only 2 kg. There is a huge market for development.
It is expected that China's paint output will reach 2.2 million tons next year, with a growth rate of about 10%. The overall development trend of the market is: the total supply exceeds demand, the surplus of middle and low-end products, the supply of some high-end products, the demand presents a multi-level, diversified development trend, the proportion of special paint further increases. Next year, the market consumption structure is: industrial coatings account for 35% to 40%, architectural coatings account for 35% to 40%, and special coatings account for 10% to 15%.
The growth rate of the industrial coating market will be around 7% next year. Among them, the production of automobiles, motorcycles, ships, and home appliances is developing rapidly, and it is expected that the demand for coatings will increase in different degrees. Such as the automotive industry, this year, the output can reach 3 million, the growth rate of more than 33%. It is expected that production will continue to maintain rapid growth next year, the corresponding growth rate of automotive coatings next year will not be less than 30%.
From January to September this year, the output of China's architectural coatings reached 463,600 tons, a year-on-year increase of 14.44%. According to the development plan of the Ministry of Construction, the average annual urban residential area will be 540 million square meters during the 10th Five-Year Plan period, which is 15.1% higher than the average annual construction area during the “Ninth Five-Year Plan” period. It is expected that the demand for architectural coatings will be 14%-15% next year. increase. Driven by the Olympic Games project and the Western Development, the architectural paint consumer market will maintain a relatively high growth rate in the coming years.
In terms of specific varieties, the situation of energy-saving and low-pollution waterborne coatings, high solids coatings, powder coatings, solvent-free coatings and radiation-cured coatings will be promising; coatings with excessive VOC content, toxic red lead, chrome yellow and other lead-chromium rust Pigments, paints with excessively high levels of free isocyanate monomers in polyurethane coatings will be limited in the market; high-grade latex paints used for urban interior decoration in architectural coatings will be favored, and decorative fire-retardant paints and floor coatings will become the rising stars. Architectural coatings Polyvinyl alcohol water glass interior wall paint (106), polyvinyl formal resin (107), starch coating, cellulose modified starch coating and other products will be further eliminated; waterproof coating will be water-based, elastic, acid-resistant , Alkali resistance, sound insulation, sealing and anti-cracking, etc., such as silicone rubber waterproof coating, polyurethane waterproof coating, water-based PVC waterproof coating, VAE waterproof coating, neoprene waterproof coating, etc.; thermal insulation in functional coatings Coatings, sunscreen coatings, anti-mosquito and flies coatings, mildew-proof bactericidal coatings and sound-absorbing coatings will be rapidly developed.
In terms of imports and exports, exports are optimistic about China's advantageous phenolic resin coatings and chemically modified natural resin coatings, and the major export destinations are North Korea, Russia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Hong Kong. The main types of imports are high-grade polyester coatings and acrylic ester coatings that are used in imported production lines.
It is reported that next year the relevant state departments will focus on cracking down on the paint industry. Some workshop-style small factories that fake brand-name products will withdraw from the market, and there will be more room for development for marketable brand-name products.
