Print two-tone (one)

Photoshop allows you to create single, double, triple, and quad hue. Monotone is a grayscale image printed with a single black ink that is not black. Two-tone, three-tone, and four-tone are grayscale images printed with two, three, and four inks, respectively. In these types of images, color inks are used to reproduce colored grays rather than different colors. This section uses the term duotone to refer to duotone, monotone, tritone, and tetratone.

About two-tone

Duotones are used to increase the tonal range of grayscale images. Although gray scale reproduction can display up to 256 gray scales, each ink on the press can only reproduce about 50 gray scales. This means that the same image printed with only black ink will look much rougher than a grayscale image printed with two, three or four inks and each ink can reproduce up to 50 grayscale images. .

Black-and-white inks are sometimes used to print bi-tonal images - black for dark areas, and gray for midtones and highlights. More often, two-tones print highlight colors with color inks. The technology produces images that are slightly tinted and significantly increase the dynamic range of the image. Duotone is ideal for using two-color print jobs that emphasize spot colors, such as PANTONE colors.

Because duotones use different colored inks to reproduce different grayscales, duotones are considered single-channel, 8-bit grayscale images in Photoshop. In the two-tone mode, you cannot directly access individual image channels (as in RGB, CMYK, and Lab modes). Instead, the channels are manipulated via the curves in the "Dual Tone Options" dialog box.

Convert the image to two-tone:

Choose Image> Mode> Grayscale to convert the image to a grayscale image. Only 8-bit grayscale images can be converted to duotone images.
Choose Image> Mode> Duotone.
In the Duotone Options dialog box, select Preview to see the effect of the two-tone settings on the image.
Select Single Tone, Duotone, Tritone, or Quadtone from the Type option.
To specify the ink color, click the ink's color box (solid box). Then, use the Color Picker or click the Custom button in the Color Picker dialog box to open the Custom Color dialog box to select the ink. For more information about the Adobe Color Picker, see Using the Adobe Color Picker.
Note: To produce a fully saturated color, be sure to specify the ink in descending order - the darkest color is at the top and the lightest color is at the bottom.

Click the curve box next to the colored ink frame and adjust the duotone curve for each ink color. (See Modifying a duotone curve.)
If necessary, set the imprint color. (See Specifying Ink Colors.)
Click "OK."
To apply a duotone effect to only a portion of the image, convert the duotone image to multi-channel mode, which converts the duotone curve to a dedicated channel. Then you can erase part of the spot channel that you want to print in standard grayscale. (See Adding spot colors (Photoshop).)
