Demand for cartons in the food and beverage industry rose

According to the Cardboard Packaging magazine's “Exclusive Survey of Cardboard Users in 2009”, compared with the survey conducted in early 2007, packaging users’ purchases of non-paperboard packaging declined significantly.

Manufacturers began to embrace the corrugated packaging again. The data shows that people’s interest in corrugated packaging increased in 2009 compared with 2007. The demand for folding cartons and rigid boxes remains basically unchanged. However, there has been a decline in the demand for F-type corrugated and paper displays in the past two years (Figure 1).

Each specific industry has its own unique requirements for carton manufacturers. For example, when the sales of the food, beverage, and electronics industries increased, textile manufacturers felt the effects of the recession. Therefore, the services provided by carton manufacturers may have very important significance only for certain industries.

Fifty-seven percent of food and beverage manufacturers claim that sales increased in 2008 compared to 2007; in addition, 69% of manufacturers predict that sales will increase again in 2009. In fact, no food or beverage processor predicts a drop in sales this year. Therefore, 53% of manufacturers will use more cartons in 2008 than in 2008.

On the other hand, 50% of food and beverage manufacturers expect a lower carton price in 2009. This may reflect budgetary constraints. These manufacturers are not price buyers. A lower carton price may indicate that 53.3% of the manufacturers have not increased their budgets, while 20% of the manufacturers have reduced their budgets.

The influence of the food and beverage industry on carton manufacturers is that food and beverage processing takes place in the country of origin, and “overseas” carton manufacturers are almost impossible to consider. 50% of food and beverage producers buy new cartons every week, and 28% of manufacturers deliver them daily.

Of the four food and beverage manufacturers, three have indicated that they had been visited by carton manufacturers during the past two months. In order to find carton suppliers, the four companies took the Internet, reviewed the list of internal suppliers, checked the list of packaging manufacturers, visited the exhibition and other ways to establish contacts.

When selling cartons to food and beverage manufacturers, sales representatives should vigorously promote the structural design of the packaging and zero defects. Other services that can attract food and beverage manufacturers include warehousing, supply chain innovation and consulting services. The services of moderate importance are 24-hour fast delivery and recycled raw materials.

Cardboard packaging is the most commonly purchased packaging for food and beverage manufacturers. Almost all manufacturers buy corrugated cartons, and 81.3% of manufacturers buy folding cartons (Figure 2).

In general, food and beverage manufacturers will be satisfied if cartons with reasonable prices and good quality are delivered on time.

The data shows that carton manufacturers are at a critical moment in expanding services to food and beverage manufacturers. In addition to the interest in warehousing and consulting, 50% of manufacturers expect that carton suppliers can manage their inventory. Therefore, if cartons must maintain inelastic prices to meet tight budget requirements, carton manufacturers have the opportunity to improve and increase services through inventory and software distribution: cartons are priced the same but additional services are priced higher.

When small carton manufacturers plan to enter the food and beverage sector, they should be cautioned. The industry is unique in that the data show that food and beverage manufacturers are more willing to purchase packages from large-scale integrated suppliers. Small carton manufacturers must have at least inventory tracking and warehousing capabilities before they can be accepted by food and beverage manufacturers.

There are various problems between food and beverage manufacturers and carton manufacturers. Three of the four food and beverage manufacturers have negative views on the carton production industry. The most commonly mentioned complaint is the carton price. "Large carton companies can impose pricing on the market," a food and beverage manufacturer's summary of the carton industry. "There are numerous mergers and acquisitions in the carton industry, and there is now a lack of healthy competition," said another food and beverage manufacturer. "The number of carton companies is too small, and the price of cartons is too high," which is the old tune.

Ninety percent of food and beverage manufacturers have responded by saying they are directly involved in cartons purchases. They generally have 14 years of experience in purchasing cartons. 55.6% of food and beverage manufacturers arrange for 2 to 3 persons to be responsible for the purchase of cartons, which is generally decided by one person.
