Rapatronic is a super high-speed camera that takes photos of nuclear explosions 7 miles (11 kilometers) from the site of the nuclear explosion. In 1952, Rapatronic cameras took a series of "Tumbler-Snapper" nuclear test photos.
Damn Interesting wrote in the blog: "This single-use camera can capture an image of ten millionths of a second after detonation, with an exposure time of only 10 nanoseconds (1 nanosecond = 10-9 seconds). The diameter of the fireball formed by the explosion usually reaches 100 feet, and the temperature is three times the surface of the sun. "
The technology at the time could not allow the camera to take another picture. For this reason, the military usually aimed 10 cameras at the same nuclear bomb. At that time, the shutter could not reach the speed required to shoot the nuclear explosion moment. To solve this problem, the experts who designed Rapatronic combined an oscillating lens array with an electrical component to make the camera's shutter time reach 10 parts per million. MIT photography expert Harold Eugene Egerton participated in the design and development of the Rapatronic camera. In addition, he also contributed to the popularity of strobe flash.
