Serious waste of resources in the metal packaging industry

[China Packaging Network News] In the metal packaging industry continues to progress, while the metal packaging industry boom and development, China's metal packaging industry also has many problems. The lack of high-end products, low industrial concentration, excessive reliance on imports, and serious waste of resources are still four issues that are still very prominent and deserve the attention of people in the industry.

At present, with the advancement of the packaging industry and the increase in consumption levels, the packaging industry, especially the metal packaging industry, has also made considerable progress. However, in the course of development, the following four issues are still very prominent and worthy of attention by metal packaging companies.

Lack of high-end products

The variety of cans is single and it is difficult to meet the requirements for further development of the packaging industry, which restricts the development of metal packaging. At present, in the market, the production capacity of two-piece cans, three-piece cans, crown caps and chemical barrels below 18 liters is excessive, and the production capacity of high-quality and high-quality products is obviously insufficient. There are too few companies that can produce small-capacity, ultra-thin tanks, special-shaped cans and boutique tanks that are suitable for supermarket shelf effects.

Low industrial concentration

The metal packaging industry is also a major industry for small and medium-sized enterprises and private enterprises. There are general phenomena such as small scale, low intensive production, low level of repetition, convergence of quality structure, and price competition. The annual domestic consumption of tinplate is approximately 10,000 tons or more, and there is still a large gap compared with scale enterprises in developed countries.

Over-reliance on imports

Most of the equipment in the metal container industry depends on imports. At present, the mainstream equipment in the world has been developed in the direction of digitization, networking, high-speed and low-consumption, more environmental protection and humanization, while China's major metal packaging equipment and timber relying on imports have not yet been fundamentally changed. Experts suggest that the competent department of mechanical manufacturing should pay attention to the improvement of the performance of packaging machinery and equipment, strive for less imports, and help save foreign exchange. In addition to printing equipment and aerosol canning equipment, the introduction of other equipment should be careful to avoid repeated introduction.

According to a survey conducted by the Metal Packaging Committee, in recent years, the annual demand for aluminum cans has hovered at 7 billion, and the annual demand for cold-rolled steel barrels is about 60 million. Metal cans are made of tinplate cold-pressed plates and aluminum plates, which are high-tech packaging materials. In 2004, the metal container industry purchased 1.5 million tons of tinplate, a significant portion of which was from imported plates. Another source of imported tinplates imported from abroad was processing tin in China, all of which contributed to the country’s large amount of foreign exchange. Due to the large degree of dependence on sheet metal, when China's steel industry lifted the anti-dumping banner in 2003 and 2004, the sales price of tinplate climbed all the way, and the industry encountered unprecedented difficulties (from June 2002 to now it has raised the price by more than 80%, and The increased costs of the metal can industry have been transferred to downstream industries by less than 20%. Companies should keep in mind the lessons learned, minimize their reliance on imported products and technologies, and accelerate their own technological progress.

Serious waste of resources

The current mode of economic growth of the packaging industry in China is still extensive and the resource consumption is very large, which is twice the world average, 4.3 times that of the United States and 11.5 times that of Japan. The energy consumption per unit of GDP in China is four times that of the United States and seven times that of Japan. As far as metal packaging is concerned, the iron and aluminum packaging materials consume 0.70 kw/h of electricity (in the same volume container) and 3 kw/h of aluminum. The specific energy consumption is much greater than that of other packaging materials. As the country has not yet formed a complete set of effective mechanisms for recycling packaging waste and related supporting policies, the recycling rate of waste is very low and waste of resources is serious.

Problems that have already been realized should be solved by means of solutions. We should improve the technological level, improve basic equipment, reduce energy consumption, and create quality products to promote healthy development.
