China's first ecosystem monitoring and early warning system has been successfully developed and put into use in Baoxing County, Sichuan Province and Lijiang City, Yunnan Province. This was revealed by He Jianbang, a researcher at the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in an exclusive interview with a reporter from Science and Technology Daily on May 6.
The upper reaches of the Yangtze River is an important ecological barrier, water conservation area and water catchment area in China. It is rich in mineral resources and dense vegetation, and there are a large number of rare species, including giant pandas and snub-nosed monkeys. However, this area is also a typical fragile ecological environment. The economy is relatively backward, and extensive development has caused soil erosion, and some rare species are on the verge of extinction or have been extinct.
The ecological monitoring and early warning system was jointly created by domestic technical institutions such as the Institute of Geography, the Institute of Botany, the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences and the Renmin University of China. Among them, the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences has designed a water source conservation monitoring and early warning model and a carbon storage / absorption monitoring and early warning model; the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Botany has designed a biodiversity conservation monitoring and early warning model; and the Renmin University of China has designed an ecosystem function economic and social impact Monitoring and early warning model; the soil conservation monitoring and early warning model designed by the Institute of Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and various thematic models developed by the system.
He Jianbang said that the content of the system mainly includes basic geography, ecological environment, socio-economic and other basic databases, and the thematic operation model and synthesis of the four functions of ecosystem water conservation, soil erosion, biodiversity conservation, and carbon enhancement. Operating model; drawn as relevant maps supported by on-site monitoring, completed basic geographic maps, land use maps, vegetation maps, water system maps and various satellite image maps of 1: 100 million in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and 1: 50,000 in two demonstration areas .
He Jianbang explained that the ecological factors are huge and the relationship between them is intricate. The large amount of data and pictures obtained by the scientific research staff and the grassroots staff in the survey seem to be fragmented and unsystematic. Through the ecosystem monitoring and early warning system, the input of survey data, the output is summary data, maps and various analyses and evaluations, and the retrieval catalogue can be formulated, and aerial survey methods can be used to check the various conclusions obtained by the analysis, which helps Policy makers and executors make scientific decisions and execute them accurately.
