Roll-to-roll printing technology promotes the development of the printing electronics industry

[ppzhan Abstract] With the development of electronic digital products such as computers and mobile phones, the printing industry has created a new section, that is, the printed electronics industry. At the same time, printed electronic devices have advantages over silicon-based microelectronic devices, so the printed electronics industry has developed rapidly in recent years, placing new demands on printing technology. Recently, the roll-to-roll ultra-fine line printing technology that will be launched will set off a new revolution in the touch panel industry.

Printed electronics is an electronic manufacturing technology based on the printing principle. In the past 50 years, silicon-based semiconductor microelectronics technology has dominated electronic technology. However, due to the increasing complexity of silicon-based integrated circuit manufacturing technology and the huge investment required, the manufacture of silicon-based integrated circuits is completely monopolized by a few large companies around the world. Therefore, the research and development of solubilized organic and inorganic semiconductor materials in the past 10 years has led to the exploration and research of manufacturing various electronic devices by traditional printing technology. The organic material can generally be prepared in a solution form, so that it has the characteristics of Printing Ink, and thus the basic unit device of the information electronic technology, the transistor, can be prepared by printing the conductor and the semiconductor material, and the complex electronic system is constructed through the transistor.

The above is the origin of printed electronics. At the same time, the application of inorganic nanomaterials in the field of printed electronics and printed electronic devices has different basic characteristics from silicon-based microelectronic devices, namely, large area, flexibility and low cost. The printing electronics industry has developed rapidly. However, with the introduction of various narrow frame products, the width of the frame depends on the line width and line spacing of the wires, while the general screen printing technology has a line width of about 60 to 80 microns, and the gravure printing technology is 30 to 50. Micron, the common yellow etching process is 30 microns, but these technologies have gradually failed to meet the needs of the touch panel factory for a new generation of ultra-narrow bezel and flexible design, so the industry needs a new conductive film printing. Equipment and technology overcome this technical bottleneck.

Recently, ITRI and Japan's international manufacturer Komori jointly developed a non-yellow roll-to-roll ultra-fine line printing technology. This technology will enable non-yellow roll to roll ultra-fine lines and develop a narrow-frame thin touch module. This advanced technology can replace the expensive yellow etching process and become the key equipment for the next generation of touch panels.

ITRI emphasizes that as long as one piece of equipment can replace 7 sets of traditional patterned sputtering, coating to development, printing and etching, the material usage rate of metal wires is also increased from 5% to 95%. The 4 to 5 layer process of the touch panel has the advantages of rate, environmental protection and significant cost reduction. In addition to being applied to touch panels, this printing technology can be applied to soft electronic applications such as OLED lighting, next-generation flexible circuit boards, displays, and solar panels.

The printing method brings not only the large area, flexibility and low cost characteristics of the end product, but also the green environmental characteristics of the manufacturing method itself. It can be seen that the field in which printed electronics can be industrialized is quite extensive. A direct application example is the manufacturing process that replaces printed circuit boards (PCBs) with printing. At present, the process of manufacturing a printed circuit board is not actually printing, but a circuit pattern is formed by photolithography and etching on a copper plated resin plate. The treatment of a large amount of toxic and corrosive waste liquid has become an environmental protection problem. The use of printing directly to form a circuit pattern can avoid the use of corrosion processes, achieve green environmental protection, and save a lot of copper. The roll-to-roll ultra-fine line printing technology is also more refined in terms of material usage than the yellow-light etching process. Liu Junting added that the current equipment using yellow etching process has a material usage rate of about 5%, that is, most of the conductive film will be wasted; on the other hand, if a roll-to-roll printing device is used, the printing characteristics of this technology are benefited. The touch panel factory can increase the material usage rate to 95%, which in turn reduces material expenditure costs. It can be seen that the industrialization prospect of printed electronics is very bright. The key is to find a suitable entry point, which can not only reflect the superiority of the printing preparation method, but also have real market demand. In the long run, printed electronics can also create new markets, as the large-area, flexible, and transparent features of printed electronics are likely to foster new consumer demand.

It is reported that many Taiwanese touch panel manufacturers are very interested in roll-to-roll printing technology, and have already planned to introduce related equipment into the new production line. ITRI also estimates the touch panel products using this technology. It is expected to be officially shipped at the end of next year, and will expand the market for ultra-narrow bezel and flexible touch applications.
